James H is a DC resident originally from Mississippi. He has always been into
music and played instruments most of his life
including oboe, bells/xylophone and percussions. 3
years ago a
public demo by Markus Smith inspired him to
learn Hand Dancing. He has been into
West Coast Swing for about a year. Swing dancing gives him an opportunity to "share my love for
music with another, one song at a time". He often
dances 6 nights a week and travels to many competitions and conventions. He
is the president and founder of an organization
called the Dance Competitions Interest Group. James
has a Computer Science degree from Jackson State
University and works as a software/programming
consultant. He is single and has two children aged
22 and 5. When he is not dancing James enjoys
playing chess, piano and video editing. Why the "H"?
When we asked what the H is for, he says "Hand Dance".
He continued with a complete explanation: First, I have been
somewhat of a musician since the 6th grade; playing
instruments such as oboe, bassoon, piano,
bells/xylophone and most percussion instruments.
Shortly after I graduated from college, I considered
getting involved in a night club band and decided
that I should have a “stage name”. Kenny G. and
Sheila E. were popular at the time. That’s how I
came up with James-H as a name. Though I never
participated in a night club band I kept the name.
Now my stage is used on the Dance floor. They call me
James-H and I love it.
